On December 1st, I participated in an EICP (Enhancing Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Primary Health Care) regional meeting in Calgary. Funded by Health Canada, the objective of the EICP inititiative is to encourage health professionals to work together in the most effective and efficient way to produce the best health outcomes for patients and for providers.

The EICP Steering Committee is comprised of physicians, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, dietitians, psychologists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and a national coalition on preventative practices who will provide leadership and direction to the Initiative.

The purpose for our meeting was to validate the draft documents put together by the EICP based on Canadian providers' attitudes towards interdisciplinary practice, the barriers it faces, and the future of primary health care. What most impressed me was the wide range of providers present and willing to work together on health care issues. It was reassuring to see that each profession identified similar barriers to implementing interdisciplinary practice in primary care -- reinforcing the idea that we are not alone in our struggles. Hopefully, with everyone working together we can begin to overcome some of these barriers.

A more complete overview of the EICP, and its objectives and functions can be found by visiting their website.
